About this walk

Cardinia Reservoir is approximately 50 minutes from Melbourne. The huge dam was built in the 1970s and is Melbourne’s second-largest reservoir. It’s an ideal spot for a peaceful family day out or large group gatherings.

There are three main picnic areas – Duffy’s Lookout, Kangaroo Flat and Crystal Brook. Crystal Brook Picnic Area is the only one with public BBQ’s. There are plenty of wide-open grassy areas perfect for a picnic.

Kids will love the freedom of open spaces and playground. Kangaroos are a highlight at Cardinia Reservoir early in the morning and late afternoon.

Walk across the dam wall on the flat, wide track to take in the immensity of the reservoir. There are plenty of opportunities for stunning photos.

A one-way road loops around the main areas of the park.

Pram Walks user, Bree, offers the following advice:

“Lovely walk on a fine not windy day across the dam wall. Parking everywhere – very easy.

Wheelchairs would be ok.

Flat surface and about 2 km return. Dogs on a leash but not allowed on the dam wall.
Toilets at the Kangaroo Flat Picnic Ground.

A gorgeous park which seems forgotten about because it’s quiet! :)”
